Why Does External Wall Insulation (EWI) Spark Such Strong Reactions?

Written by Sean Hill | Feb 25, 2025

Every once in a while, a comment lands in our inbox that is more than just feedback - it is a full-on rant. The latest one (see screengrab below) was not just critical of External Wall Insulation (EWI); it was angry, rude, and frustrated.

So, let’s take a step back. Why does something as practical as insulation provoke such a strong reaction? And what does it reveal about people’s frustrations with the industry, sustainability, and misinformation?

The Frustration Behind the Fury

At RISE Design Studio, we talk a lot about how buildings perform, how they breathe, and how they interact with people. But there is another crucial element at play: how people feel about them.

Some people look at EWI and see:

  • Lower energy bills
  • Less reliance on fossil fuels
  • Homes that stay warm without excessive heating

But others see:

  • Poorly installed systems lead to damp and cold bridges
  • A lack of skilled labour resulting in rushed or improper application
  • Costs that feel out of reach

When people feel unheard, ignored, or misled, frustration builds up.

The Problem With Poor Insulation Installs

Not all External Wall Insulation projects are created equal.

  • In some cases, EWI has been installed incorrectly, leading to damp issues, trapped moisture, and poor performance.
  • Many homeowners have been left with substandard work, rushed jobs, or a lack of knowledge in the industry.
  • The UK construction sector has struggled with a skills gap, meaning some installations are not done to the high standard they should be.

When someone lashes out in a comment, it often stems from real experiences of bad workmanship, misleading advice, or the high costs of fixing previous mistakes.

Misinformation and Mistrust

The internet is full of conflicting information on insulation. One source says EWI is the best thing you can do; another warns that it will ruin your house. Who do you believe?

People do not just get angry for no reason. Often, anger is rooted in mistrust. If you have been told one thing and experienced another, it is frustrating.

Our approach is to cut through the noise. The truth is:

  • EWI works when done correctly, but not every home is suitable
  • Material choice matters - natural, breathable materials like wood fibre and cork help prevent moisture issues
  • Good design and expert installation are crucial - without them, problems arise

When people are left with poor explanations, rushed solutions, or half-baked retrofits, it is no surprise they feel like they have been misled.

How Can We Fix This?

Instead of shouting back at the critics, we want to address their concerns. Because underneath the rudeness, there is usually something real.

  • Clear, honest advice – EWI is not for everyone. If a home is not suited for it, let’s not pretend it is
  • Proper materials – Low-carbon, breathable materials help prevent damp and are better for the planet
  • Better training and skilled workers – A huge part of the problem is poor installation. The more we raise industry standards, the fewer problems homeowners face

The Takeaway: Criticism Isn’t The Enemy - Bad Information Is

We could easily dismiss this comment as someone having a bad day. But we would rather learn from it.

  • If people are frustrated, it means there is still work to do in educating and improving standards in the industry
  • If people feel misled, we need to be clearer about what works and what does not
  • If people are angry, it means they care. And that is something we can work with

So, to the person who sent that message: We hear you. We do not agree with the way you said it, but we understand the frustration. Let’s do better.
