The University of Southampton's Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) at Boldrewood Campus is a world-leading center for maritime innovation, business, and education. This Maritime Centre of Excellence includes the Lloyd’s Register Global Technology Centre, the University Engineering Centre, and a new Marine and Maritime Research institute. The 4.3-hectare site, designed by Grimshaw, features state-of-the-art facilities, positioning the university at the forefront of maritime research. The collaboration between the university and Lloyd’s Register, which has relocated 400 team members to this site, offers unparalleled opportunities for students and researchers to engage with real-world maritime challenges.

Our Director Imran Jahn was the lead Architect of the interior, leading the design and coordination of prime commercial office space. Highlights include a feature atrium stair, designed as a ‘white steel ribbon’ with yacht deck style stair finish.

The completion of Phase 1 in 2014 provided a new way of delivering engineering education and research, transforming the Boldrewood Campus into a ‘Maritime Centre of Excellence’ ultimately enhancing Southampton’s status as an international maritime city, which features a new Technology Centre for the Lloyd’s Register Group, will sit on the university’s 4.3 hectare ‘suburban’ Boldrewood site.
